Obituary

Gary Joseph Carter, 43, of Hartford, IL, Passed away on June 25, 2026.

Born in Alton, IL, Gary was the beloved son of Pamela (Whalen) Carter and James Carter. He was an irreplaceable brother to Jason Carter, an uncle to Zachary and Taylor, a devoted father to Joseph Whalen Carter and Jaxson Ryder Long and a loving companion to Heather Long.

Gary was preceded in death by his son, Gary Joseph Carter, Jr. and father, James Carter.

Gary took great pride in his work as an electrician and in heating/cooling. He loved working on his treasured 1979 Chevy pickup truck and was always willing to lend a helping hand, especially to his mother around the house.

Known as an all-around good guy, Gary had an incredible sense of humor and could make people laugh wherever he went. He enjoyed taking vacations and always had entertaining stories to tell about his work and his travels, especially the unforgettable encounters he seemed to have with deer along the road. His kindness, generosity and willingness to help others touched everyone who knew him.

Gary is also lovingly remembered by his many aunts, uncles, cousins and countless friends. His warm heart, laughter and caring spirit will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

Though our hearts are broken, we find comfort in the memories he gave us and the love he shared so freely.

His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and in the family who loved him beyond words.

Forever in our hearts, always in our memories.

A celebration of Gary’s life will begin at 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 1, 2026 at Gray Funeral Home in Wood River. Services will follow at 6:00 with Rev. Stephen Gray officiating.

Burial will be private.
