A proud and decorated Vietnam veteran, Greg served his country with honor, courage, and dedication. Following his military service, he began a long and successful career at Laclede Steel, where he worked until his retirement. Never one to remain idle, Greg continued his commitment to serving others as Head Groundskeeper at Greenville University and later as a Boat Patrolman for Fayette and Bond Counties, a role he faithfully fulfilled until his passing. His strong work ethic, unwavering sense of duty, and willingness to help others earned him the respect and admiration of all who knew him.
Greg had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and found great joy in fishing, hunting, and sports throughout his life. The lessons he taught and the relationships he built left a lasting impact on countless lives. He also volunteered with numerous organizations and was always ready to offer a helping hand, a kind word, or a listening ear to anyone in need.
Greg was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 53 years, Cathrine Sue Riggins, whose love and companionship were the foundation of his life; his parents, Homer Riggins and Wanda (Farrell) Riggins White; his brothers, Robert L. Riggins as well as Jimmy Riggins and his cherished grandchildren, Rikki Riggins and Brenden Riggins.
He is survived by his loving children, Melissa Riggins of Greenville, Illinois, and Thomas Riggins of Wood River, Illinois; ; his grandchildren, Scott Riggins, Makenzie Riggins, Alexis Williams and Johnathan Williams , Kaylee Massey, Carl Riggins, and Caleb England; six great-grandchildren, with one more precious blessing lego as papa liked to call him expected to arrive soon; as well as many nieces and nephews, dear friends, former athletes, and community members whose lives were enriched by his kindness, guidance, and friendship.
A celebration of Greg's life will begin at 4:00 p.m. until 6 p.m. service time on Wednesday June 24, 2026 at Gray Funeral Home in Wood River, Illinois. Burial will be private.
Greg will be remembered for the love he gave so freely, his unwavering devotion to his family, his faithful service to his country and community, and the warmth, kindness, and wisdom he shared throughout his life.
