Her kindness, resilience, and devotion will remain a guiding light to all who knew her.

Leola Mae Blackston, born May 31, 1940, in Panama, Illinois, passed away on July 27, 2026, in Alton, Illinois, after a period of ill health.

Leola’s life was marked by deep commitment to family and an abiding presence in the lives of those she loved. Throughout her eighty-six years, she cultivated bonds across several generations, providing care, support, and warmth to her extensive circle of family and friends.  She had been a lifetime auxiliary member of the Alton VFW post 1308 and was a member of the Friendship General Baptist church in East Alton for many years.

Leola was the beloved wife of the late Lonnie D. Blackston, with whom she shared many cherished years before his passing. Her enduring love for her family was evident in her unwavering support for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Leola is survived by her daughter, Redina Lea Shrum, and son-in-law, Denny Shrum of Farmington, MO; her son, Charles Adair, and daughter-in-law, Charlene Adair of Collinsville. She was a devoted and proud grandmother to Thomas Ward, Crystal Ward, Lucas Adair, Shane Adair, Shea Adair, Loretta Adair, Aaron Adair, Melanie Adair, Brad Adair, Joy Adair, Christopher Adair, Brandi Adair, and a cherished great-grandmother to Jessie Shrum.

Her relationships extended beyond her immediate family. Leola was also a treasured relative to many: brother-in-law, Rick Blackston and his wife Cathy, nieces Jennifer Blackston Stodgell, Elizabeth Stodgell and Brian; great niece, Aubrey Stodgell; great-nephews  Braiden Digges, Tyler Digges, and Gerrit Oezer; special friends, Shannon and Sandy Hobbs and Debbie Tidwell.  Each held a special place in her heart and benefited from her generous spirit.

Leola’s memory will also be honored by many, even as she joins in peace her late husband Lonnie D. Blackston, sons George Adair and LeRoy Adair, and sister Charlotte McNish in eternal rest.

The impact of Leola’s life will be commemorated on Thursday, August 6, 2026. A Celebration of Life will be held at Gray Funeral Home, 205 E Lorena Ave, Wood River, Illinois, beginning at 10:00 a.m. and continuing until noon. A Funeral Service will follow at 12:00 p.m. at Gray Funeral Home.  Brother Bob Cheatham will officiate.  Burial will take place immediately afterward at Wanda Cemetery, 915 Indiana Ave., South Roxana, Illinois.

Leola Mae Blackston’s legacy lives on in the admiration and affection of her family and friends. Her kindness, resilience, and devotion will remain a guiding light to all who knew her.
