Shirley Darlene Malone-Wilson—beloved mother, devoted grandmother and great-grandmother, cherished sister, steadfast friend, and wife—entered her eternal rest on July 27, 2026, in Alton, Illinois, at the age of 86. As the soft light of Monday evening settled, her precious family surrounded her, sharing stories of the countless ways she shaped and enriched their lives. In the warmth of their love, Shirley gently took her last breath, completing a journey marked by tenderness, generosity, and enduring grace.

Born on January 9, 1940, in Alexander County, Illinois, Shirley’s life began with the quiet promise of love and adventure.  A place where her love for gardening began. From her childhood onward, she would grow into a woman whose presence created memories wrapped in both laughter and peace—a home where the threshold always felt like the doorway to somewhere magical.

Shirley was the heart of her family. She leaves behind those who were the joy and pride of her days: her husband and best friend, Keith Wayne Wilson, who was the love of her life. Together, they wove a tapestry of years filled with laughter, devotion, and countless shared moments. Their home was a haven—a place where love flourished, and memories were threaded into each passing day.

She is dearly missed by her daughters, Sarah G. Malone and Mary Jane Kenny; by her son, David Charles Malone; her children’s spouses, Jeff and Sara; her grandchildren—Samuel A. Malone, Sadie W. Mills, Caleb, Macie W. Rose, Robert, Carter W. Kenny, and Maggie J. Kenny; and her great-grandchildren—Nora, Ira, Asa, Fergus, and Lewis Mills, along with Samuel, Abraham, and Hannah Rose. Each of them carries a piece of Shirley’s boundless affection and wisdom, passed along in soft grandma kisses, laughter-filled games of cards, and the comfort of her understanding embrace.

Her sister, Beverly Prater, survives her, as do her sisters- and brothers-in-law, Vicki Walker, Mike, and Levy Corey. Shirley joins in eternal peace her father, Clarence Buster; her mother, Thelma Louise Buster; and her beloved sister, Crystal Corey, whose memories still echo in the stories shared around the family table.

Shirley’s memory springs vividly to those who loved her: her home, forever a magical “Narnia” to her grandchildren, was filled with treasures to explore, laughter bouncing off every wall, the constant aroma of something delicious wafting from the kitchen, and the gentle clink of cards during another of grandma’s legendary games. She delighted in dressing up, her fingernails always perfectly done, dispensing grandma Shirley Kisses to her grandbabies and great-grandbabies.

She was the family’s first teacher, offering lessons not only in words but in her daily actions. Shirley could sew a dress fit for a wedding or mend a shirt scorched by a too-hot iron. She conjured comfort and beauty, creating a home that both dazzled and invited—with style that seemed lifted from the glossy pages of a magazine, yet never at the cost of warmth. Her table was always full, her heart open, and laughter never far from her lips. She could stretch a nickel into a dollar, a gentle queen of thrift; she encouraged those around her to “stick with it,” leaving no challenge unconquered.

A woman of deep faith, Shirley knelt by her bed to pray with her children, her legacy found as much in love as in belief. She exuded wit—quick and endearing—infusing any gathering with joy, and facing every obstacle with bravery, grace, and a touch of sass. Though human and flawed, as we all are, she was pure joy to be around: an encourager, a supporter, an inspiration for all who knew her.

Those who were fortunate to call Shirley a part of their lives will cherish her memory. Her influence will continue to ripple through generations—the lessons taught from her kitchen table, the comfort found in her home, the reassurance of her steady presence.

Friends and family are invited to visitation, which will be held on August 2, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Gray Funeral Home, 205 E Lorena Ave, Wood River, Illinois.  Burial will be private for family.

We will remember Shirley Darlene Malone-Wilson for her magic, her joy, her resilience, and the way she made each of us better for having loved and been loved by her. Her legacy is woven into every heart she touched, and though her absence is deeply felt, her spirit endures in the love we carry forward each day.
